Sao Paulo, Brazil (AHN) - In a week of gang violence that threatens both parties in this year's elections, police kept up running gunbattles with criminals on Thursday. Some critics are blaming President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for not living up to his promise that he would improve the lives of the poor. However, his main opponent in the election, former Sao Paulo state Gov. Geraldo Alckmin, is also being criticized for not being able to stamp out the First Capital Command gang that launched the attacks on Brazil's most populous state. David Fleischer, a political scientist at the University of Brasilia, said, "This will have a nationwide impact because many other cities in Brazil have had waves of violent attacks." So far, the death toll stands at 156 since last Friday.
