Laisenia Qarase Sworn In As Fiji?s Prime Minister

Suva, Fiji (AHN) - Laisenia Qarase was sworn in Thursday for a second five-year term as Fiji's prime minister. The Nationalist leaders party Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) party, won 36 seats in the 71-member Parliament following May 6-13 parliamentary elections. The Associated Press reports that Qarase had also secured the written commitments of support from two independent lawmakers that gave him a majority of 38 seats. The opposition Fiji Labour Party has the support of two lawmakers from the allied United Peoples' Party. It won 31 seats in the tightly contested election.
