Burma (AHN) - Senior United Nations Envoy Ibrahim Gambari is in Burma for talks with local authorities. The UN has described the visit as an overdue and potentially important opportunity to assess developments in the country first hand, reports the Financial Times. It says that Gambari, the first top UN official permitted to hold political talks in Burma in two years, wanted to see how the UN can help the country, also known as Myanmar, move in the direction of all inclusive democracy, sustainable development, and true national reconciliation. There has been a growing international outcry over what appears to be the Burmese army's biggest offensive against the ethnic Karen minority in ten years, with thousands of villagers being forced from their homes in Karen State since November, many of them fleeing to makeshift camps along the border with Thailand.
