London, England (AHN) - (AHN) - A New Zealand man becomes the first double amputee to successfully summit Mount Everest. BBC News reports Mark Inglis lost both legs during a climbing accident in 1982. His wife Anne tells reporters he called Monday to say he had reached the top of the world's highest mountain. Inglis was carrying a spare set of prosthetic legs in case he was in an accident. But, Mrs. Inglis says he encountered "no issues." When he was scaling Mount Cook in New Zealand, bad weather forced him and his climbing partner to take shelter in an ice cave for two weeks. They barely survived the incident. Inglis legs were badly frostbitten and had to be amputated. Despite the loss of his legs, Inglis continued climbing and other physical activities. He even won a silver medal in cycling at the Sydney Paralympics.
