Suva, Fiji (AHN) Counting of votes begins in Fiji, Monday, after a racially charged election which saw a low turnout of voters, a report said. According to Fijilive.com, caretaker Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has won the Lau Fijian Communal seat after claiming 4896 of 5943 votes up for grabs in the constituency. After winning his seat Qarase told Reuters, I am very confident that we will win. My projection is 42 seats, thats a very comfortable majority. Mr. Laisenia Qarase, is pitted against the Indian opposition leader, Mr. Mahendra Chaudhury who was ousted in a coup by armed nationalists in 2000. Both are hoping for a majority in the 71-member Parliament.
