Tehran, Iran (AHN) - Foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) member countries scheduled a meeting on Monday to discuss possible technical, trade and political concessions aimed at enticing Iran to give up its nuclear program. Iran reaffirmed its defiant position through a statement issued by Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Monday. Mottaki told western diplomats in Tehran, "Any demand for a suspension or pause is an illogical and unacceptable demand and undoubtedly will be rejected." Although Iran has claimed its nuclear program is peaceful, Western powers have remained suspicious it could be a cover for producing atomic bombs and other nuclear weapons. Over the last several weeks, the U.S. and EU member states have considered the option of placing sanctions on Iran through a U.N. Security Council resolution. Some major powers like Russia and china have insisted on using diplomatic measures to resolve the crisis.
