UN: Civilian Death Toll In Iraq Rises To A Record High    Updated:21 September 2006
On Wednesday, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq's Human Rights office, released a report raising the number of Iraqi civilians killed in July and August to 6,599, a record-high number, much more than its initial estimates suggested. The report from the U.N. has highlighted the crisis faced by the country, ranging from evidence of torture, unlawful detentions, growth of sectarian militias and death squads, and a rise in "honor killings" of women.

Eight German Warships At Full Speed To Lebanon    Updated:21 September 2006
On Thursday, in its biggest naval operation since World War II, Germany set off eight warships for Lebanon to help the U.N. keep the peace in the war torn nation. Failed Female Bomber In Jordon Gets Death Sentence    Updated:21 September 2006
On Thursday, seven people were sentenced to death for three consecutive deadly hotel bombings that killed 60 people in Amman, Jordan's capital last November. A 35-year-old Iraqi woman, Sajida al-Rishawi, was the only defendant in custody. She confessed to her failed suicide attack on Jordanian television shortly after the blasts on one of the Western hotels. However the six others, who are believed to be hiding in Iraq, including another Iraqi woman, were sentenced to death in absentia.

One Dead, Many More Injured Or Missing In German Train Crash    Updated:22 September 2006
One person died and 10 others are missing and feared dead, after a Transrapid high-speed magnetic- levitation train carrying 29 people, went off on a test track Friday in northwest Germany. Dieter Sturm, the spokesman for the Emsland district authority said, "Unfortunately we can only assume that the 10 missing people, who are trapped in the train, will only be brought out dead.''

Thousands Rally Against Pope In Mideast    Updated:22 September 2006
Thousands of Muslim worshippers staged marches against Pope Benedict XVI in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza on Friday, waving green Hamas banners and denouncing him as a "coward" and an "agent of the Americans." The Vatican has been seeking to defuse anger after Benedict cited the words of a Byzantine emperor who characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as "evil and inhuman," particularly "his command to spread by the sword the faith."
