Italy To Commit 2,500 Troops To Lebanon    Updated:29 August 2006
The Italian government on Monday said it will contribute to the planned international peacekeeping force that will be deployed in southern Lebanon to help maintain the fragile cease-fire in the region. Italian undersecretary Enrico Letta said the government approved on Monday Italy's participation in the U.N.-backed peacekeeping mission.

S. Korea Says Pyongyang Is Capable Of Testing Nuclear Weapons    Updated:28 August 2006
South Korea's main spy agency said on Monday that North Korea has the facility to test-fire a nuclear weapon and said these facilities were on a standby mode, awaiting orders from Pyongyang. Rep. Shin Ki-nam head of the parliamentary intelligence committee and a ranking government official both quoted King Seung-kyu as telling a close-door meeting of the committee there is a possibility the North would test a nuclear explosion.

A report published by Israel's Trade and Industry Ministry Monday warned that tens of thousands of small and medium-size businesses in northern Israel are in danger of having to close their doors as a result of the economic damage caused by the recent war with Hezbollah.

Sharon's Condition Improves    Updated:29 August 2006
Doctors at Tel Aviv's Sheba Medical Center announced Tuesday that they had successfully treated comatose former leader Ariel Sharon for double pneumonia and had moved him out of intensive care. Sharon's condition severely deteriorated two weeks ago. A CT scan at the time showed infections in both of his lungs and an MRI indicated decreasing brain activity.

Hamas Lawmaker Says Palestinians To Blame For Situation In Gaza    Updated:29 August 2006

Italian Troops Head To Lebanon    Updated:29 August 2006
Italian troops have left for Lebanon as part of a deployment to buttress the UN peacekeeping mission in the country. The 800 troops are part of what Rome calls a "long and risky" mission in Lebanon. Italy has send they will send a total of 3,000 troops to the country, making them the largest contributor to the UN force in Lebanon.

IDF Kills 2 Terrorists In West Bank    Updated:29 August 2006
Israeli troops shot dead two Palestinian terrorists during a gun battle in the West Bank town of Nablus Tuesday morning. A third gunman was wounded in the firefight, as were two Israeli soldiers. The shooting began after Israeli forces surrounded a house in the ancient town's Balata district where members of Fatah's Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade had holed up.

UNHCR Bringing Aid To South Lebanon    Updated:29 August 2006
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has been carrying tents, blankets, mattresses and cooking kits into southern Lebanon on a daily basis. So far, at least 17 convoys have arrived in the southern portion of the country devastated by the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah.

Annan Visits Devastation In Lebanon    Updated:29 August 2006
United Nations Secretary General on Tuesday viewed the devastation in southern Lebanon caused by the 34-day fighting between the Israeli army and the Hezbollah militants. Annan toured the southern part of the country after meeting with Lebanese officials to discuss the deployment of 15,000 international peacekeeping force. He also visited the 2,000 U.N. troops currently deployed in the region at the southern port of Naqoura before flying over the scenes of the destruction.

Police Seize Hot Meat From China At Port Of Manila    Updated:29 August 2006
The police on Tuesday seized four trucks full of banned frozen meat from China at the Port of Manila in the Philippines. Police Senior Supt. Francisco Don Montenegro of the Philippine National Police anti-smuggling task force said, "They're banned items. This would fall under unfair trade competition because they would be sold at lower prices compared to the prevailing market value."

Japanese Yakuza Top List Of Aliens Barred From Philippines    Updated:29 August 2006
Suspected members of the Japanese Yakuza (Japanese gangsters), top the list of foreigners barred from entering the Philippines during the fist six months of 2006, officials of the Bureau of Immigration said Tuesday. Immigration records show a total of 797 aliens were prevented from entering the country from January to June because of several reasons but mostly because they were either classified as undesirable aliens or were traveling using a fake travel document.

Palestinians: No 'Freedom Of The Press' In Gaza    Updated:29 August 2006
Dozens of Palestinian journalists protested outside the offices of the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza City Tuesday against a growing campaign of intimidation and censorship by terror groups and the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority. A number of Palestinian reporters and editors have been beaten and killed over the past few years. The authorities have never managed to capture their assailants.

Annan Booed In Hezbollah-Stronghold In Lebanon    Updated:29 August 2006
UN chief Kofi Annan was booed by a crowd chanting pro-Hezbollah slogans today as he toured Beirut's southern suburbs devastated by Israel's war against the Shiite militant group. Dozens of men, women and children angrily waved pictures of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and shouted "Allah, Nasrallah and all of the suburbs" while others booed and shouted "death to Israel" and "long live Syria" as they surrounded Mr. Annan's convoy of vehicles accompanied by a heavy security detail.

Gaza Becoming Lebanon, Warns Israeli Security Chief    Updated:29 August 2006
Israel Security Services (Shin Bet) chief Yuval Diskin Tuesday warned that the Gaza Strip will soon pose as big a threat to Israel as Hezbollah-controlled southern Lebanon did two months ago. In a briefing to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Diskin said that Palestinian terrorists are smuggling huge numbers of weapons and even personnel into Gaza via the Sinai Peninsula.

Two Undersea Quakes Hit Southeastern Indonesia    Updated:29 August 2006
Southeastern Indonesia is struck by two undersea earthquakes on Tuesday. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that one quake hit south of North Sulawesi and measured 5.6 in magnitude. This was followed by aftershocks in the same area. Later, another quake with a magnitude of 5.1 hit northeast of Tanimbar Islands in Maluku province.

The New York Times reports that the major terrorist plot that was exposed in Britain was not set to take place in the near future as it was publicized; the report also claims that the fact that 10 planes were targeted was an exaggeration. Olmert Rejects Annan's Appeal Over Lifting Blockade    Updated:30 August 2006
Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert on Wednesday, threw out a request from U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan to lift air and sea blockades from Lebanon at a joint news conference. Olmert rejected Annan by saying that the cease-fire, U.N. security Council resolution 1701, needs to be executed completely: "The international community must not divert its attention [until that happens]."

Olmert To Annan: Not Without Our Soldiers    Updated:30 August 2006
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert put UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on notice Wednesday that Jerusalem will not view Security Council Resolution 1701 as fully implemented until its abducted soldiers are returned. While much of their meeting focused on the deployment of international peacekeepers to and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, Olmert stressed that "Resolution 1701 would not be implemented in full without the soldiers' release and return home."

Kim Jong Il Of North Korea May Be Conducting China Visit    Updated:30 August 2006
A South Korean newspaper has quoted intelligence reports claiming that a special North Korean train that its reclusive leader Kim Jong Il uses, has reached China. But the Dong-a Ilbo newspapers said the intelligence report does not indicate if the communist leader was on board the train. The train left for China at the height of the fresh tension in the region because of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.
